RAW Awards 2010 Forgotten Warmth 3

Title: Forgotten Warmth Medium: Ink, Paper, Fire Year: 2009 “#Forgotten Warmth”# is my journey of revisiting the letters my family and friends sent to me during the course of the past one and a half years when I came from Malaysia to Australia. More often than not, one tends to forget the love and concern given to him by people around him through words. For me, it is only during this revisit that I have got the chance to reread and rethink about the messages and intentions behind the choice of words used. It made me realised that the underlying meanings of some Mandarin phrases could never be translated or expressed using other languages. This garment made out of written letters represents the ability of these words to provide warmth, but this warmth is impermanent, which is symbolised by the burns on the letters. Eventually it will be forgotten, tucked away deep within our mind, waiting to be revisited again. Christopher Tay May 2009
