Youth Council Calls for Co-operation
"Youth Deputy Mayor Kylie Emonson said the students wanted answers to questions such as why Bendigo City Council voted against the regional arts centre and why Marong had opposed the heated pool. She said the people of Bendigo had been suffering for years and youth had recently been affected when two councillors failed to support the appointment of a youth officer to the region. Kylie, from Flora Hill High School, said the students had appointed a sub committee to work out the details of this forum.
During the first 12 months in operation the students also looked into the lack of suitable entertainment for young people in Bendigo, tackled overcrowding on school buses and sought to have CFC's banned in their schools. They tried to carry the fight against fluorocarbons to a wider stage by writing to Prime Minister Bob Hawke asking him to support the ban call. However in discussion yesterday they were sceptical about
the value of his reply in which the PM commended them on their concern but evaded any discussion of direct action.
The Youth Council met yesterday in the former council chambers in the Bendigo Town Hall with the problems of skateboarders being one of the main items on the agenda."
