You Can't Stop the Beat

You might think theatre would lose its touch, with television and film taking over the entertainment industry – but that would make it clear that you haven’t seen Hairspray, currently being performed at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne. This production uses television to its advantage; creating the set completely out of LCD screens, and making the stage look like a cartoon on TV. Paired with the joy of seeing live performers on stage, Hairspray creates a whole new, fabulous experience.

The musical, set in 1960s Baltimore, follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair, and with the dream to appear on her favourite television show. When the opportunity arises, she stops at nothing to achieve her goal, meanwhile making new friends and falling in love with the heart-throb, Link Larkin – but there are a lot of exciting things happening in Baltimore, and giant obstacles that this girl is sure to overcome. The musical promotes being happy with who you are, and doing what you love, no matter what others may think.

The cast and crew feature many famous Australian performers, such as choreographer Jason Coleman, and winner of So You Think You Can Dance, Jack Chambers. The leading role is played by Jaz Flowers, who has also appeared in Fame. Each of the characters was portrayed flawlessly with great enthusiasm. It’s fascinating to watch performers of such amazing talent.

Vibrant colours fill the stage in the form of lights and costumes, both carefully planned out to wow the audience without being too over the top. Although at some points there was a bit too much going on at once, it was overall visually pleasing.

The greatest thing about musicals is the music! Hairspray features many upbeat numbers that make you want to jump up on stage and join them in the dance, but of course you must stay in your seat and quietly groove on your own. Nothing’s stopping you from singing along! As enjoyable as it is, occasionally in the bigger numbers the sound of the orchestra and the cast can get a bit muddled and it’s difficult to hear what’s being sung.

Hairspray the Musical is cheesy and fun, and definitely worth watching if you get the chance. There’s a very good reason why it gets standing ovations!
