From the Bendigo Adverister's website. NERVES are running high for nine Bendigo Senior Secondary students who will compete for the distinguished musician of the year title tomorrow night.

After years of practice and tireless preparation, the year 12 students will give their all at the Bendigo Bank Theatre, at The Capital, from 7.30pm.

Each student is required to perform a 15-minute solo act with the instrument of their choice.

BSSC music teacher and event co-ordinator Matt Pankhurst said the calibre of this year’s performers was extremely high, despite a decrease in the number of participants.

“The standard of student performance at this event, as it has been in past years, will be outstanding.

“Many of the performers will go on to have active music careers and all will have a lifelong passion for performing.”

Mr Pankhurst said several previous winners had since toured with the Australian Youth Orchestra and many had gone on to university.

“The event is held by the Bendigo Instrument Music Program and this year’s judging panel will be comprised of a number of prominent music educators – many of whom are leaders in their field,” he said.

“This was in recognition of the very high standard of instrumental music education that Bendigo enjoys.”

Among the instruments to feature this year include French horn, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals and drums.

The event is open to the general public and entry is by gold coin donation.
