My Traineeship Journey at YO Bendigo

By Caitlin VanDolderen, 21 October, 2025

When I first applied for the traineeship at YO Bendigo in early 2024, I was simply looking for a starting point—a way to step into the professional world and begin building a career. I had no prior experience in business administration, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found was an opportunity that has completely transformed my confidence, skills, and future goals.

Since beginning my traineeship, I’ve completed my Certificate III in Business Administration and am now working towards my Certificate IV in Business. The traineeship has allowed me to study while gaining hands-on experience in a supportive and dynamic workplace. It’s been more than just a job—it’s been a journey of growth, learning, and discovery.

At YO, my role is to support the team in whatever way I can. Most of my work is admin-focused: I monitor the YO inbox, create our weekly newsletter, prepare agendas and minutes for team meetings, process purchase orders and invoices, and schedule social media posts. I also help with event and workshop preparation and assist with school engagement activities when needed.

One of the most exciting parts of my traineeship has been the opportunity to backfill our unit’s Senior Administration Officer role multiple times. I’ve also had the chance to shadow her and learn directly from her experience. This role is something I aspire to hold one day, so being able to step into it—even temporarily—has been incredibly valuable. I’ve learned how different systems work, gained a deeper understanding of the responsibilities involved, and built a new level of confidence in my abilities.

When I first started, I often underestimated myself. I was nervous and unsure, and stepping into a professional environment felt intimidating. But thanks to the encouragement and support of my team, I’ve been able to push past those fears. I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone time and time again. I now have bigger goals than I ever imagined when I first walked through the doors at YO.

There have been so many highlights along the way. I was named Student of the Month at Integrity Business College, featured in GB magazine in an article about the traineeship, and I’m proud to be a finalist for the upcoming Trainee of the Year Award in November. I’ve also had the privilege of being part of the Youth Awards, where I got to see the incredible young people of Bendigo being recognised for their achievements. These moments have meant so much to me, and they’ve reminded me of how far I’ve come.

But above all, the most rewarding part of this experience has been working with the team at YO Bendigo. They’ve been nothing short of amazing—supportive, encouraging, and always willing to help me grow. I’ve learned so much from them, and I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such a positive and empowering environment.

This traineeship has truly been life-changing. It’s the perfect starting step for anyone wanting to enter the corporate world, build their skills, and gain confidence in their work. I couldn’t recommend it more highly. If you’re considering a traineeship, take the leap—you never know just how far it might take you.
