My Year at YO by Ella Filsell

By Caitlin VanDolderen, 15 February, 2024

As this week draws to a close, so does my journey as a trainee at YO Bendigo (YO). Working here has been nothing short of life-changing, an experience that will resonate with me for years to come.

When I initially learned about the traineeship opportunity at YO, I had just completed high school and found myself at a crossroads. Unsure of whether to pursue a career in hospitality or to further my education, I grappled with uncertainty about my future. I am a planner, and I like to know what is coming. This traineeship has provided me with the invaluable gift of time—to pause, reflect, and chart a course for my future.

Throughout my role, I have been afforded countless opportunities for personal and professional growth. At YO, I discovered a passion for writing and content creation, honing my skills in administration. The supportive environment fostered a newfound confidence, both in my work and in myself. Ella

My journey at YO has been full of different experiences. From engaging with local stakeholders and participating in school visits, to assisting in the coordination of events across Greater Bendigo, I have gained invaluable insights into community engagement and local government. Presenting to audiences, including the Executive Management Team and Councillors, has further bolstered my communication skills and broadened my understanding of important issues.

Being part of an organisation dedicated to empowering and enriching the community has been immensely gratifying. The sense of fulfilment derived from contributing to the collective well-being of those around me is indescribable, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity.

For those who know me, it is evident just how deeply this experience has impacted me. I am extremely thankful for the wealth of knowledge and skills I have acquired during my time here, and I am now ready and eager to embrace future opportunities with confidence and enthusiasm.
