You're YOke-ing; the event that outran the rain

The YO Events team have spent months organising and planning You’re YOke-ing, a YO Bendigo takeover of Dai Gum San on Good Friday for the Bendigo Easter Festival. Everyone was getting geared up and ready to go,  but the weather forecast rained on our parade! As they say, the show must go on! So, we pulled out our umbrellas and snorkels and moved the event into the YO Bendigo youth space at 45 Mundy Street.

This was definitely the right move! It was a wild and wonderful day of live music, creative activities, and workshops all sheltered from the cold, wind and rain outside. The Jam Stage was hosted by The Unknown - a talented bunch from Crusoe College, the incredible Rory Phillips, and the marvellous Amy Tie. A bunch of young local musicians joined them on stage and showed us all how remarkable our creative youth are!

Beyond the music there were creative activities for all ages; Badge making, face painting, fuse beads, colouring in, and keychain making. HipHoportunities brought in DJ workshops and two exceptionally talented local comedians Dane Knowles and Patti Fawcett, two exceptionally talented local comedians were running excellent comedy workshops. The Anglicare KIT Van set up out the front was a big draw card and it’s always great having fantastic initiatives like them at our events. They have some great advice and resources on keeping in touch with your mates and looking after your mental health.

The whole event had a calm contentedness that one can only attribute to the fact that the event was inside: warm and dry, on an otherwise miserable day. Loads of people followed their ears interested in the fantastic singing floating out the front door, and some followed posters up the street like a treasure hunt, where You’re Yoke-ingYOke-ing was the prize. Some came across us as they were wandering back to their cars and saw a gazebo and an open door. No matter how they found it, everyone had a smile on their face and were chatting animatedly amongst each other about how cool the event this was.

We’d like to give a huge shout-out and thank you to our generous partners that were there on the day - HipHoportunities and the KIT Van.  If you missed out on You’re YOke-ing, keep an eye on the YO Bendigo page for upcoming events. The next Jam event will be the Rainbow Jam on IDAHOBIT – Wednesday 17th May 4 – 6 pm in the library gardens which will include a flag-raising ceremony too.
