Victoria Tangey
Former Youth Councillor Victoria Tangey
Victoria Tangey was a Youth Councillor from 2019 to 2023 and was one of the inaugural members of Youth Council. Victoria was Deputy Youth Mayor in 2021 and Youth Mayor in 2022.
Victoria left the City of Greater Bendigo Youth Council in 2023 after 5 years. Since leaving she completed her university studies and is now the proud owner of two degrees with distinctions (Bachelor of Property and Real Estate and Bachelor of Commence).
She then moved to Melbourne to work at Mirvac a listed property trust. Victoria is now an Assistant Development Manager and is responsible for the design and delivery of medium density housing at a project in Donnybrook Victoria.
Youth Council enabled Victoria to have confidence in her abilities and provided skills such as public speaking, advocacy, strategic thinking, cooperation, leadership, peer support, and submission writing. These skills have supported her well into her career.
Victoria was empowered in her work as a Youth Councillor and developed a love for strategic thinking and community building. To be afforded the opportunity to have real and lasting impact on the community and the strategic plans that provide direction to the leaders of the community is rare; and is something Victoria is extremely grateful for.
Many of the opportunities offered to Youth Councillors are usually not available to young people. Participating in committees, attending council meetings, preparing strategic advice even simply learning how to participate in a formal meeting. Victoria was quite reserved and quiet in her first term as a Youth Councillor however as she built skills and trust in her own abilities, she was able to become a very active participant in external committees, events, and the Youth Council leadership group as both a Deputy Youth Mayor and Youth Mayor.
Victoria found passion in upskilling and encoraging younger Youth Councillors to be active and confident in their advocacy. As a more senior member of the group, Victoria was able to provide advice and motivation to her peers. This passion has continued to follow Victoria in her career as she has now become a mentor for interns at her workplace.
Victoria says that “Youth Council provides more than career experience and personal development. It allows young people to find passion in building communities and fostering positive outcomes.”
Victoria credits her Youth Council career as a defining contributor to her current skills, confidence, passions, and professional career.
