Why you should take a gap year ✈

By Jazzmyn Bieleny, 07 May, 2025

This article was written by Jazzmyn Bieleny during work experience at YO Bendigo.

Taking a gap year is very important for many things. This period of time is such a significant time of freedom, self-growth and personal development. It is the first opportunity for true self direction, without being tied to real responsibilities. If you are unsure of your next chapter in life, a gap year will allow you to explore your interests, passions, gain skills and discover you, before diving into anything you are unsure of, and more importantly, a gap year may even change your direction completely. It is always beneficial for graduates to take a break before taking the next steps after the high stress of those final high school years.

There are so many ways and possibilities to spend your gap year...

Travel or working holidays overseas

Why not immerse yourself in a different culture? Create memories, broaden your horizons, and see the world! You can arrange your own plans to travel abroad, or set up an overseas work exchange. This can take care of your living expenses AND you can earn money while you’re at it too! There are many different types of jobs, such as working in hotels, as an au pair, on farms, and so much more! Various websites and programs such as GoOverseas can help you explore your many options around the world!

Complete a Traineeship

How about an apprenticeship? Or even a certificate? Develop valuable workplace skills and experiences and explore industries of interest whilst gaining qualifications. Bendigo TAFE offers a wide variety of amazing courses, ranging from six months to three years. Some tuitions have also been reduced, so it may be worth checking out. Visit the Bendigo TAFE website for more details, or attend an Open Day to see for yourself!

Volunteer with an organisation

Feel connected to the community, build new skills, meet new people and try new things! Many different organisations are currently looking for volunteers, from food drives to sport clubs, community projects to charities. There’s plenty of different opportunities, offering many different types of work

Start a small business!

It doesn't have to be a huge project! Whether it is dog walking, baking or selling products at your local market, this is a great opportunity for personal growth, creativity, opportunity and learning. Nowadays, not every business needs a physical shop. You can start a website, or even make a new page on Instagram or Facebook. Be sure to tell friends and family, and they’ll support your local business!

Find a new hobby

This may be playing an instrument, learning a language, creating art, cooking or picking up a new sport. It might also be fun to do it with a friend, so keep your eyes open for fun, exciting new interests!

Create Personal Goals!

Motivation to work on yourself doesn’t just have to start on New Year’s. If there is something you have been meaning to start doing or that you have wanted to change up, now is a chance to try new things and refresh your understanding of who you are and want to be. Maybe you could learn to cook something new, or try a personal best in something you’re good at.

Despite what some think, this choice will not impact your life plan and stop you from ‘getting ahead’. It will in fact do the opposite, everything will be there when it's over, and what is more valuable than the opportunity to explore? The skills, independence and experiences you develop during a gap year can add so much value to your personal portfolio, you will never look back. Don't let the pressures of others' timelines dictate yours, I believe it is a unique opportunity not to let pass by and I encourage everyone to deeply consider taking a gap year.
